EUNIC Istanbul project 'Spaces for Culture' provides spaces and resources for the realization of cultural projects between Europe and Turkey, within the visual and performing arts, as well as for discussion, training and development opportunities for local institutions. 27 projects were selected for co-financing under the EUNIC Cluster Fund 2020 with a total of 333,700.00 Euros. In reaction to the current Covid-19 crisis and the impact it has had on culture worldwide, this year’s call had a special focus on support to local cultural and creative scenes. EUNIC Albania – Archeovision - back to the future
The project focuses on Albania's archaeological heritage in the context of post-earthquake reconstruction (where EU and Member States provide major funding and expertise) as well as the impact of the pandemic in terms of reducing physical tourism. It will be made of two types of activitie: (I) transmission of cultural content via film screening, conferences and workshops about archeology in general and in Albania in particular (physical and/or remote brodcasting and conferences) ; (2) a digital skill training project aiming at providing a multidisciplinary solution for virtual tours in the diverse antique sites of Albania.

EUNIC Algeria – Film Critic Encounters -- an Algerian premier
Film criticism is an important part of the healthy development of any film industry and ecosystem. Good criticism helps non-specialist audiences to identify with new perspectives, nuances and to question the way that they view and consume cinematographic content. In Algeria, the absence of film schools, a dormant film industry, this project will develop new links with EU film experts and critics. Algerian film aficionados will engage in vibrant dialogue and exchanges with European actors through discussion panels and online learning opportunities to build capacity. EU screenings will provide more exposure of Algerian films, and Algeria-EU mutual understanding enhanced.

EUNIC Belarus – Human Library: EUNIC Belarus Edition
The joint project of six EUNIC members in Belarus, the EU Delegation to Belarus and the local partner, Belarusian cultural NGO “Human Library Minsk”, will focus on fostering intercultural communication between Belarus and the European countries. It aims to create a platform for open and respectful dialogue on the concept of good neighborliness and stereotypes related to it. Due to epidemiologic restrictions, the project will be designed online mostly. The format will allow inviting a greater number of participants and reaching a larger audience.

EUNIC Berlin – BABYLON EUROPA 2021
Babylon Europa is a unique project built up in past two years with an ambition to continue on a yearly basis. It brings together various European artists, who involve themselves in new cultural interactions. We create a cooperative platform, which includes a professional curator and several partners from the local cultural scene. Combining music, dance, performance and spoken word, new European art pieces are being created. This work concludes with a final show on a prestigious stage and simultaneous online streaming. But it lives even after, while working with a broadening network of artists and partners involved.

EUNIC Bosnia and Herzegovina – Bridges between Herzegovina
Bridges between Herzegovina aims to provide mentorship and training to young people from the Herzegovina region in the field of media, music, culture and arts. By increasing positive perceptions of an existing shared Herzegovinian identity composed of different cultures and traditions, the creation of alternative narratives is supported, and hence divisions and extremism countered. The project will include the creation of an interactive Bridges of Herzegovina map that will serve as a digital platform with information on the region.

EUNIC Brasilia – Media Literacy - Combating misinformation
Training for teachers in the Federal District - to be multipliers in the community - in the field of arts, education and human rights, aimed at raising awareness of their role as consumers and producers of information and culture. The objective is to show the relevance of dealing critically with the various information from the media and networks in a context of disinformation. The training will be given by local and international experts, who will encourage the use of digital technology in the production of art, quality information and democratization of knowledge. The project will promote exhibitions and publication of products developed in Portuguese and English.

EUNIC Brussels – The Future of Living
As the world experiences an unprecedented health crisis, we are facing an unbalanced relationship between nature and the technology we create. We must rethink creativity & innovation as the seeds for a sustainable future. This requires continuous efforts, new skills, new actors, shared spaces and human-centric approach to AI and new technologies. This change also relies on building responsibility from the start when pursuing creativity & innovation in designing a new European Bauhaus. With partners from the fields of arts, research, science and industry, our project aims to develop a sustainable co-creation hub to kickstart a wider transformation of our societies.

EUNIC Bulgaria – e-UConvArt
The e-UConvArt is a project for online conversations about converting industrial, urban buildings into successful, independent and sustainable contemporary arts centres in Bulgaria. Building on the success of the Cultural Academy, it will support the set up of strategy of the Toplocentrala independent art centre by offering virtual art residencies focusing on one thematic area. The second stage will open the conversations between artists, arts organisaitons and professionals at the virtual conferences, which will provide the platform for interactive workshops and discussions. The final stage will share content (virtual exhibitions or showcases) from countries of the EUNIC cluster.

EUNIC Egypt – Building a virtual Egyptian European Space for Culture
Despite the negative impact that 2020 pandemic has inflicted to the cultural scene, locally and world-wide, shaking it to the roots of its own meaning as a physical phenomenon, it has created a positive momentum of self-reflection that might conduct to a reshape of the idea of a cultural event itself. In order to face an on-going scenario of restrictions on physical space due to social distancing rules, it becomes imperative to support the promotion and dissemination of online content, as it has naturally animated the local cultural scene recently. A virtual Egyptian European Space for Culture would be the response to the pandemic threats and to the civil society needs of cultural content.

EUNIC Ethiopia – Tibeb Online
Why go digital? To create and maintain creative cultural networks. Tibeb Online is a concept for an open and interactive digital platform where Ethiopian and European artists and creative professionals can showcase their expressions to audeinces and exchange experiences through open dialoge.
Through the platform, creatives will get the opportunity to establish and strengthen theír networks with one another as well as with other stakeholders within the sector, helping strengthen the cultural scene in Ethiopia that has been tested greatly by the pandemic.

EUNIC Israel – European-Israeli Podcast Project
A forum for contributors from arts, culture and science, the European-Israeli Podcast Project addresses questions most pertinent both to Europe and Israel. The bilingual English and Hebrew episodes allow the diverse and international audience of Haaretz to approach the European Union’s multifaceted character through a discoursive format committed to issues deeply rooted in today’s reality on both sides. Interdisciplinary encounters between European and Israeli speakers facilitate the assessment of common challenges from different perspectives and allow to establish mutually benefitial lines of convesation relating to the present and future of both Israel and the European Union.

EUNIC Italy (Rome and Naples) – Quartieri di Vita. Life infected with Social Theatre!
EUNIC clusters Naples and Rome present a social theatre inclusion project “Quartieri di vita” designed for socially disadvantaged groups in the South Italian region Campania. Clusters and the Campania Foundatzione dei Festival organize seven theatrical workshops lead by seven European stage directors for women victims of violence, adolescents at risk, migrants, the disabled, people with psychiatric disorders, etc. The project brings together professional figures (stage director and facilitator) with gifted target groups to communicate through the liberating ritual of stage culture. The results of the 14 days of production workshops are seven shows and visual projects for the audience.

EUNIC Kenya - Wasanii Waomoke (Empowering Artists)
While the profound disruption to cultural life and livelihoods caused by the Covid-19 pandemic is evident across the world, the pandemic is also revealing and magnifying the cultural industries’ pre-existing volatility. The EUNIC Cluster Kenya is aware of its role in supporting the local arts and culture scenes especially in these times and show solidarity with the Kenyan Government in its efforts to create long term solutions for the supply and demand for Arts and cultural goods and services. An open call grant for individuals and organisations will support activities that enhance their recovery from COVID 19 and contribute to the continous growth of the sector.

EUNIC Kraków – Renowa Huta
The aim of this project is to reflect on the future of this urban district from its social-ist past to a neighbourhood of bad reputation, in search of new economic, social and artistic functions. Tables of debate with experts from our respective countries together with Polish interlocutors, exhibitions, film, multi-language promotion feed two days that will make known the origins, the idiosyncrasy, the specific challeng-es of Nowa Huta and, in the meantime, as a mirror, the reflection about this district question the general issue of industrial and post-industrial cities in whole Europe.

EUNIC London – Imagining Futures - Independent Festivals in a Post-Covid World
Imagining Futures is a project supporting independent UK performing arts focused Festivals to explore and develop future thinking and strategies at a critical time. It connects visionary festival leaders from the UK with European counterparts to dissect pressing challenges facing festivals today. The new network will bridge divides through training, sharing strategies and knowledge to enhance recovery and to actively develop new European artistic approaches and co-commissions. Across a year, peer-to-peer sessions and artistic development will lead to commissioned co-production. The project allows festival leaders space and support to imagine new futures in a post-covid, post-Brexit era.

EUNIC Mexico – Flash ACT - Art, Science and Technology
The virtual project Flash ACT "Arts, sCience and Technology" aims to explore new pathways of collaboration between art, sciences and technology to foster environmental awareness and develop innovative tools for science dissemination. By modifying the way in which we perceive and conceive our environment, we may be capable to transform our relationship with it, in a deep and significant way. Because hybrid art addresses real challenges, translates them into direct experiences, promotes systematic thinking and encourages active engagement, it seems particularly suitable for environmental education. Curiosity, creativity, cooperation, optimism, and problem-solving will be actively encouraged.

EUNIC Morocco (Rabat and Casablanca) – DANCE-FUSION
FUSION offers the opportunity to young Moroccan dancers to: professionalize, network and train in a safe environment, overcome traditional restrictions of interactions between men and women, enabling appropriating the (public) space through a creative process. Dance improvisation mixes individuals from different national, cultural and social milieus, boosting a vivid local creative dance and music scene and raises awareness for performing arts among a broader public. Dance-fusion will spillover from a rehearsal studio into a larger hiphop and contemporary dance community, enabling a mixing of audiences. Fusion will scale-up from an initial target group to build "a mixed dance community".

EUNIC Mozambique – Digital Platform of Visual Arts in Mozambique
It is a digital space that brings together artists, curators and exhibitors to publicize and document the visual arts made in Mozambique and to promote local cultural initiatives. This platform will be a data store of Mozambican arts, will create a basis for an educational support for schools and universities and will allow artists to be present on national and international cultural markets. The model adopted by this platform is that of cultural sponsorship, where cultural institutions in Mozambique support the platform by curating and publishing artists and exhibitions at a symbolic cost, in order to guarantee an operational fund for the development and disclosure.

EUNIC New Delhi – Hoogli Heritage Hub
Just north of Kolkata, along the Hoogli River, Indian city life blends with the unique built heritage of former European settlements.The Hoogli Heritage Hub project starts a dialogue with people living in the area around the use of public spaces; both as safe venues for socialising around cultural activities during the pandemic, and in terms of their potential as sites for sustainable development and job creation around heritage tourism. Local cultural partners engage residents and audiences in interactive co-creating performances touring the area’s public spaces, exploring the best ways forward when it comes to creating inclusive and inviting urban common goods.

EUNIC New York – UN/MUTE - 10002
COVID-19 has shuttered artists from residencies, travel, and exhibitions. This project dives into our digitalized world connecting EU and New York City based artists from various disciplines and gives them an opportunity to work on a collaborative artistic project. During a three-month online residency, the process of creative collaboration is put under a magnifying glass and presented via edited zoom recordings onto a website, giving the viewers the unique opportunity to monitor it. UN/MUTE explores what it means for a European artist to virtually meet a transatlantic counterpart of different age, race, culture and artistic medium in order to create a new and unique work of art together.

EUNIC Nigeria – A Culture of Memory
The proposed heritage project is aimed at repositioning Nigerian museums through increased cooperation between EU Countries and Nigeria / African cultural professionals working in the museums sector through capacity building, networking and other exchange activities. The activities will be focusing on some of the following themes; audience development and more inclusive approaches to museum sustainable models, museums and education, museum as public spaces in the times of COVID-19 and post-COVID scenarios.
Part of the planned content shall be: three virtual workshops across the thematic areas with cultural professionals from across Europe and Africa including Nigeria.

EUNIC Paraguay – Rehabilitation of Caballero Park in Asunción
Project aligned with citizens’ interests and government policies. Consists in carrying out a collective memory recovery and enhancement process, with the strengthening of citizen organizations linked to the historic Caballero Park in Asuncion. Abandoned and degraded by situations generated by authorities’ negligence, countryside-to-city expulsions due to monoculture and climate change linked phenomena; it occupies an important place in locals’ collective memory. Contemplates three results: 1. ​Situational study to propose action measures​: Diagnosis of the situation, with special attention to cultural and social areas / Audiovisual production on the Park’s conditions / Park improvement plan. 2. ​Promote citizen participation​: Establishing a dialogue table with stakeholders to strengthen the social fabric. 3. ​Deploy a collective cultural action in the park​: A coordinated action agenda between cultural institutions and citizens.

EUNIC Prague – Tranzit Residencies. Cultural Deserts
After times of crisis and disconnection, artistic mobility and creative exchange need our full support. The Tranzit Residencies will bring together European curators and artists in Czechia to support international exchange and the co-development of a concept for the 2022 “Matter of Art” international biennial. The joint work will help reorient the biennial concept in a post-Covid-19 situation, critically reflecting the question: “Can art mediate experience across class, gender, cultural borders, and is it possible to emotionally and sensually feel someone else’s experience?" The project will support production of new art pieces to be presented during the "Matter of Art" 2022.

EUNIC Romania - New Regional Cultural Cooperation
New Regional Cultural Cooperation is a professional program aimed at improving capacity building and finding solutions for the cultural sector, by stimulating exchange and regional cooperation in Eastern Europe. The main goal of the project is to strengthen a weakened cultural sector and to increase the competences of the cultural operators in Romania, Serbia and Moldova. The project is organized by the EUNIC Cluster in Romania, with the support of the EUNIC Clusters in Serbia and Moldova, which gives a strong regional dimension to the program. To support the capacity building process, the program offers micro-grants to provide new and innovative solutions for the cultural sector.

EUNIC Singapore – Conference on Culture | Smart City
Smart City is a term referring to concepts that aim to make cities and societies more livable with the help of digitisation, primarily in the areas of infrastructure, technology and policy. This project seeks to extend the discourse with a cultural perspective, raising issues in the interconnection of arts, culture and science and technology, as envisioned in the New European Bauhaus initiative. Following the digital launch of this initiative in 2020 (including a fellowship programm and a digital platform) this grant application is to secure the further developement of this initiative and to host a conference as part of World Cities Summit 2021 in Singapore.

EUNIC Slovenia – Creative Boost: Empowering the Society through Cultural and Creative Industries
With this project, EUNIC Cluster Slovenia wishes to accompany the local authorities, creative hubs and educational institutions in their pursuit of making creativity a driver of both national and European development. Creativity figures as a cross-sectoral priority high on the agenda of the upcoming Slovenian Presidency of the EU Council. This priority is supported by four different ministries (economy, culture, foreign affairs, and education) and by the newly established Center for Creativity (2017), a public interdisciplinary platform striving to support Slovenia’s cultural and creative sector and co-financed by the EU’s ERDF and the Republic of Slovenia.

EUNIC St. Petersburg – VITAA - A Virtual Artists´ Assembly
VITAA is an acronym for “A Virtual Artists´ Assembly” - a “virtual residency" organized by the Saint Petersburg “Museum of non-conformist art” and members of the EUNIC cluster. Over a period of four weeks in 2021, six artists from European countries will collaborate with four Russian artists in an “online studio space”. The ten artists will collaboratively prepare a virtual exhibition: "The City as Image and Practice in Times of Global Change". This “virtual residency” format explores new ways of how to continue with international cultural exchange in times of severe travel restrictions.
