Due to ongoing conflict, mass displacement and community fragmentation, Sudan’s rich intangible cultural heritage - oral histories, visual symbolism and social rituals - is at immediate risk of loss. Concurrently, a generation of displaced Sudanese youth faces interrupted education and systemic exclusion from global creative markets.
Unbound Sudan responds to this crisis by leveraging the power of collaborative 2D animation as a dynamic digital archive. Operating through a hybrid, transnational network of regional hubs in Cairo and Nairobi, alongside a dedicated digital Sudan node, a trauma-sensitive safe space for cross-border collaboration is created. Traditional illustrators and visual storytellers are paired with professional regional animation studios (Samaka Studio, Freehand Studios) and European tech mentors to transform authenticated heritage assets into compelling digital art.
The programme delivers a unique dual-impact strategy on:
- Safeguarding cultural heritage: by archiving oral history, landscapes and lived experiences into animated formats.
- Professional Pathways: equipping 16 key creatives with market-ready, open-source 2D production skills.
- Rooted in the principles of co-creation and mutual learning, the project establishes a sustainable,resilient model of international cultural relations in times of displacement and disruption.
